Stimulating Strategies

  • Two cups of Coffee a day offers maximum alertness and concentration. (i.e. 8am & 3pm) Recent research involving 1500 students consuming more than 2 cups per day, revealed higher levels of anxiety, depression, stress related problems and lower academic performance.
  • Coffee contains caffeine, theobromine (the addictive component of chocolate) and theophylline.
  • Decaf Coffee contains two of the three and can still raise blood pressure and heart attack risk. Decaf also contains undesirable residues of extracting chemicals.
  • Both contain Chlorogenic acid which raises LDL cholesterol and homocysteine.
  • Tea and Coffee promote dehydration as the are both diuretics. (i.e. promote more frequent urination) Try to drink 1 glass of water for every cup of coffee & tea.
  • Green Tea contains ½ the caffeine found in black tea (25mg vs 50mg) and a suite of cancer-protecting anti-oxidants (polyphenols).
  • Black Tea also contains polyphenols but they are largely neutralised with the addition of milk.
  • Rooibos tea contains low tannins, no caffeine and it is rich in anti-oxidants (flavonoids & polyphenols). It does not dehydrate or hinder iron absorption and it tastes great.
