Two cups of Coffee a day offers maximum alertness and concentration. (i.e. 8am & 3pm) Recent research involving 1500 students consuming more than 2 cups per day, revealed higher levels of anxiety, depression, stress related problems and lower academic performance.
Coffee contains caffeine, theobromine (the addictive component of chocolate) and theophylline.
Decaf Coffee contains two of the three and can still raise blood pressure and heart attack risk. Decaf also contains undesirable residues of extracting chemicals.
Both contain Chlorogenic acid which raises LDL cholesterol and homocysteine.
Tea and Coffee promote dehydration as the are both diuretics. (i.e. promote more frequent urination) Try to drink 1 glass of water for every cup of coffee & tea.
Green Tea contains ½ the caffeine found in black tea (25mg vs 50mg) and a suite of cancer-protecting anti-oxidants (polyphenols).
Black Tea also contains polyphenols but they are largely neutralised with the addition of milk.
Rooibos tea contains low tannins, no caffeine and it is rich in anti-oxidants (flavonoids & polyphenols). It does not dehydrate or hinder iron absorption and it tastes great.
